Faith and Philanthropy: A Tangible Expression of Faith
Philanthropy, the act of giving and helping others, has long been considered a noble endeavor. It is often viewed as an expression of love and compassion for our fellow human beings. For believers in Christ, philanthropy takes on an even deeper meaning. It becomes an embodiment of our faith, a way to live out the teachings of Christ and fulfill our calling as His followers. It is a call for one to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Scripture is replete with passages that highlight the importance of giving and serving others. In Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus teaches, "For I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty, and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me... Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me." This powerful message emphasizes the inseparable connection between our actions towards others and our relationship with Christ.
One of the most famous biblical verses on giving is found in 2 Corinthians 9:7: "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." This verse reminds us that giving should come from the heart, willingly and joyfully. It highlights the transformative power of generosity, not only for the recipient but also for the giver. These forms of giving are through time, talents, and tithe. Many shy away from forms that are not directly tied to “Temple” service. The reality is that the public ministry of Jesus is what guides and directs our practices and doctrine.
Furthermore, our faith teaches us about the importance of stewardship. In 1 Peter 4:10, we are reminded, "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." This verse encourages us to utilize the resources and talents we have been given to benefit others. Philanthropy becomes a way to be faithful stewards of God's blessings and to make a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Philanthropy is not merely an act of charity but a profound expression of our faith in Christ. By giving and serving others, we embody the teachings of Christ, follow His example of selflessness, and fulfill our calling as His disciples. As we engage in philanthropy, let us remember not just the words of Jesus, but the practices of Jesus that define outreach as a practice of faith.
